Join the Geochemistry Group as a co-opted member

The Geochemistry Group is looking to appoint one new co-opted member to join our committee. The deadline is 04.10.2022. Applications will be evaluated in mid-October for a late-October start.

The role of the committee members is to support the Geochemistry Group’s usual activities (awarding student travel bursaries/awards , organizing our annual research in progress meeting, organizing career events). In addition, we hope that these new appointments will help improve representation of minorities on the Geochemistry Group steering committee as well as assist in devising and implementing strategies that address the lack of diversity within the wider UK geochemistry community. The appointments are made for 3 years.

Geochemistry Group Award Winners 2022

We are excited to announce that Dr. Arola Moreras Marti is the winner of the Geochemistry Group Postdoctoral Medal! She won for her paper entitled: “Quadruple sulfur isotope biosignatures from terrestrial Mars analogue systems” in GCA.

Arola is originally from Barcelona where she did her undergraduate in Geology at the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB). She then did her PhD at the University of St Andrews, and is now a Postdoctoral Researcher between the University of Glasgow and University of St Andrews. Her field of study has been astrobiology, with particular focus on trying to understand how signatures of life, also called biosignatures, are preserved on Mars and Europa analogues. During her PhD she focused on sulfur isotopes (hence the paper!), but is currently I am studying organic biosignatures, in particular lipid biomarkers, on a Europa analogue.

Arlola loves doing fieldwork in Iceland – here she is near the recently erupted Fagradalsfjall volcano.

We are also pleased to announce that Dr. Jacqueline Campbell is the winner of this year’s Geochemistry Group Prominent Lecture Series. Jacqueline is a Schmidt Science Fellow at the University of Oxford, working on ocean acidification.

Dr. Jacqueline Campbell is an Earth and Planetary Scientist who specialises in satellite remote sensing. She was a tube train driver and care worker for many years before taking evening classes to learn more about space science, then studying for a degree in Earth and Ocean Science at the Universty of Brighton. She went on to earn her PhD at UCL Mullard Space Science Laboratory on searching for organic signatures on Mars. She is currently a Schmidt Science Fellow at the University of Oxford, working on ocean acidification, and engages in outreach to encourage people from low-income backgrounds like herself to become scientists.

The award funds a series of lectures within Great Britain or Ireland. If you are interesting in hosting Jacqueline to learn more about life on Mars and/or a career in science, you can reach out to the Geochemistry Group or email her directly.
